Happy Monday, South Metro! Can you believe we are almost into August? If you have school-age kids, but haven’t started school shopping yet, you’re not alone. A new survey says most parents in Oregon don’t start grabbing that back-to-school stuff until mid-August. Which means you still have a couple of weeks before the annual tradition of discovering that every store is mysteriously out of the exact folder color your kid needs.
Coming up in today’s South Metro Weekly…
A Wilsonville student’s classroom project is now hitting the streets.
Pizza, gelato and espresso come together in Lake Oswego.
And, full-moon music, aerial dancers and a nighttime river paddle headline the week’s events.
Want to put your business in front of thousands of engaged readers, affordably? Fill out this form.
Thanks!

SPONSORED BY SEVEN LANE

What would you do with an extra three hours this week?
Hi, I’m Cayla, owner of Seven Lane Home Concierge.
People often ask what a home concierge actually does. The answer is simple: I handle the tasks that keep filling up your to-do list, giving you more time for the people and priorities that matter most.
That might mean waiting for a repair appointment, returning packages, organizing a closet, scheduling services, grocery shopping or coordinating work around your home. None of those jobs is especially complicated—but together, they can take over your week.
Seven Lane is about more than checking boxes. My goal is to reduce the mental load, lower your stress and help everyday life run more smoothly. Support can be weekly, monthly or simply available during an especially busy season, with every service tailored to your household.
Because sometimes the most valuable thing you can add to your week isn’t another task completed. It’s a little more breathing room.

🚓 Wilsonville Student Designs a Patrol Car That’s Hard to Miss

Courtesy: Wilsonville Police Department
Wilsonville’s newest police vehicle comes with school spirit—and the work of a local student riding along on every call.
Wilsonville High School senior Rowen Rankin created the wrap for the Wilsonville Police Department’s School Resource Officer vehicle after his design was selected through a graphic design class competition.
The vehicle is assigned to School Resource Officer Zach Keirsey, who works at Wilsonville High School throughout the academic year.
Students were challenged to develop concepts for the new wrap, with Rankin’s submission ultimately chosen for production. He said he wanted the Wildcat to serve as the centerpiece and credited the project with helping him grow his design skills.
Rankin also added one small detail most people will never see: his signature inside the driver’s door.
His work will now travel throughout Wilsonville for years to come—a classroom project taken well beyond the classroom.
And yes, this may be the first student design assignment that came with lights, a siren and a push bumper.

🍨 Pizza, Gelato and Espresso Come Together in Lake Oswego | Pizzeria Otto is adding something sweeter next door with the opening of Otto Gelato & Espresso at Mercato Grove. The new shop will take over the former Fills Donuts space and pair Italian-style gelato with espresso drinks just steps from Otto’s Neapolitan pizza restaurant. Owner Clark Hale is partnering with the team behind Pronto Gelato for the new concept. A grand opening is planned for noon Saturday, Aug. 1—because apparently pizza followed by gelato needed to become even more convenient.
🧘 New Wilsonville Studio Blends Hot Yoga With Whole-Body Wellness | Azend Hot Yoga & Wellness is now open in Wilsonville, offering 60- and 90-minute hot and warm yoga classes, including traditional 26+2 sessions, flow classes and adaptive chair yoga. The family-run business also brings several wellness services under one roof, including cryotherapy, red-light and salt therapy, mild hyperbaric oxygen therapy and Hydrafacial treatments. More info here.
🌳 Canby’s Newest Park Nears an August Opening | Canby’s long-awaited new park at North Locust Street and Northeast 20th Avenue could open in August, pending a final safety inspection. The park will include walking paths, playground equipment, a picnic area, a half-size soccer field, a basketball court, splash pad and restrooms. Its opening was delayed by playground inspections, splash-pad supply issues and a remaining grass-related contract matter. The City Council is also expected to consider an official name for the park at its Wednesday, Aug. 5 meeting.
🍳 Village Pathways Helps Students Build Real-Life Skills | The Village Collective is offering monthly cooking classes and practical independent-living lessons for high school students in Sherwood and Newberg. Each participant receives a free meal, leftovers and a $25 restaurant gift card, with additional gift cards available for regular attendance. Students can learn more and get connected here.
🚔 Clackamas County Sheriff Announces Sudden Retirement | Clackamas County Sheriff Angela Brandenburg will retire today, ending a 35-year career with the Sheriff’s Office. Brandenburg was elected sheriff in 2020 and reelected in 2024, leaving about two years remaining in her term. Her departure creates a vacancy that will be filled by voters in the Nov. 3 general election, with candidates able to file starting August 3.
🚧 Washington Street Closure Coming to Downtown Sherwood | Drivers will need to plan around a five-day closure on SW Washington Street as crews begin paving between SW Division Street and SW Tualatin Street, including the Division/Washington intersection. The closure runs today through Friday. The road will reopen overnight for local access most nights, but will remain closed overnight Wednesday for cement-treatment work.
🛣️ West Linn Street Sealing Work Begins July 31 | West Linn residents will also see temporary street closures as the city begins slurry seal work as early as this Friday. Affected streets will generally close for one day, with vehicles and other personal property required off the roadway by 6:30 a.m. Streets are expected to reopen by 5 p.m., weather permitting. Residents should also keep bicycles, children and pets off the fresh seal until barricades are removed. See the full list of affected streets here.

What was West Linn originally called?

Don’t forget: the Thursday edition of South Metro Weekly will be full of events taking place this weekend in our area.

🐾 Each week, we spotlight a local adoptable pet searching for a fresh start. Some are playful, some are professional couch warmers, and some are still learning the rules of living with humans. What they all have in common is the hope that their next stop will be a loving South Metro home. This week’s furry friend is ready to meet you.
🐕 Meet Annie Oakley | Annie is a 1-year-old Australian cattle dog weighing about 35 pounds. She can be a little reserved in the shelter, but once she feels safe, her gentle and loving personality begins to shine.
Annie would do best with a patient adopter who can help build her confidence through consistency, positive reinforcement and plenty of enrichment. Herding-dog experience would be a bonus. She may enjoy a well-matched canine companion, but she is not a good fit for homes with cats or other small animals. A home with adults or respectful teenagers 13 and older would likely suit her best.

These are the weeks when summer in Oregon is darn near perfect: sunshine throughout the week, perhaps a few clouds Tuesday and highs in the mid-80s.
