Happy Monday, South Metro. Summer doesn't officially arrive until next week, but Mother Nature is getting an early start. With temperatures expected to approach — and in some neighborhoods exceed — 100 degrees, today's issue is dedicated to helping you beat the heat. Thankfully, we're nowhere near Portland's all-time record of 116 degrees during the infamous 2021 heat dome—and we'd all like to keep it that way. 🥵 🏊‍♀️

In today’s South Metro Weekly:

  • Your guide to splash pads and pools across South Metro.

  • Lake Oswego is trading sandwiches for donuts, and we’re all in on it.

  • Tualatin turns their traffic enforcement camera back on.

How South Metro Stays Cool When Temperatures Soar
🌡️ With temperatures climbing into the upper 90s, local families are finding creative ways to stay cool—from splash pads and pools to libraries and movie theaters.

Murase Plaza Park, City of Wilsonville

The first significant heat wave of 2026 has arrived, and South Metro residents are feeling it. Forecasters expect temperatures to reach the upper 90s Monday, with some locations potentially approaching 100 degrees before cooler weather arrives later this week.

Fortunately, this isn't the historic heat dome of 2021, when Portland shattered records by reaching 116 degrees. Still, officials say the combination of hot afternoons and unusually warm nights deserves attention.

One challenge is that overnight temperatures are only expected to fall into the mid-to-upper 60s, giving homes without air conditioning little chance to cool down before the next day.

"Extreme heat is more than just uncomfortable—it's dangerous," the Oregon Department of Emergency Management warned ahead of the weekend.

Fortunately, South Metro offers plenty of ways to escape the heat. (See the article below.) Families are expected to flock to splash pads, pools, libraries, cooling centers, and even air-conditioned movie theaters like Regal Bridgeport Village, where $1 summer movies are now showing on weekday mornings.

The good news? Temperatures are expected to drop back into the 80s by Tuesday and Wednesday.

Mr. Maple Donuts Planning Lake Oswego Location
🍩 We don’t know when yet, but the family-owned donut fan fav is expanding again.

Mr. Maple Donuts has listed a new location at 363 S. State Street in Lake O as "Coming Soon" on its website. The shop would occupy the former Subway location near downtown Lake Oswego.

Started in Vancouver in 2018, Mr. Maple has grown to multiple locations across Washington, Oregon, and Arizona, including a shop in Wilsonville that you may already be familiar with.

The menu goes well beyond traditional glazed doughnuts, featuring apple fritters, bear claws, maple bars, cream-filled varieties, doughnut holes, specialty creations, and a full lineup of coffee and blended drinks. The company has also become known for colorful kid-themed doughnuts and unique house specialties.

An opening date has not yet been announced, but the Lake Oswego location is expected to operate daily, opening as early as 5 a.m.

We'll keep an eye out for an official opening date and share it once it's announced.

🐾 Every week, we'll feature a local adoptable pet looking for a forever home. Some are playful, some are chill, and all are hoping their next stop is a South Metro living room. This week’s featured furry friend is ready to meet you.

🐾 Meet Myrtle - If you're looking for a dog that can keep up with an active South Metro lifestyle, Myrtle may be worth a closer look. This 2-year-old Siberian Husky and Pit Bull mix weighs about 70 pounds and loves getting outside for walks, playtime, and adventures. Shelter staff say she's become more playful and bouncy as she's settled in, though she can be a little cautious when meeting new people.

Myrtle would do best with an experienced dog owner who can provide plenty of exercise, training, and positive reinforcement. A secure fenced yard and an active family would be ideal. Because of her size and energy level, she's recommended for homes with children 13 and older, and she may do well with another respectful dog following a meet-and-greet. If you've been thinking about adding a four-legged hiking buddy and loyal companion to the family, Myrtle is waiting to meet you. 🐶 Myrtle is currently available for adoption at the Clackamas Pet Shelter and would love to meet her future family.
