Good morning, South Metro. The last time I was this interested in soccer was in elementary school, when the cutest girl in sixth grade asked me to play. A very early experience in, “hate the game, not the playa.” 💘 Anyway, Team USA plays today (Thursday) at 7PM against Turkey. ⚽ Go USA!
By the way, nearly 1,500 neighbors are reading South Metro Weekly every single Monday and Thursday, and we gain about 100 new subscribers a day. If you own a business and want to get in front of those readers, just reply to this message and let’s talk.
In today’s South Metro Weekly:
A West Linn third-grader gets honored for helping neighbors escape a house fire.
Tualatin’s tricky train crossing fix is moving forward, slowly.
Plus: Pokémon, skate jams, nachos, and enough local fun to make your weekend plans full of harder choices than you were looking for. 😃

Alright…on to the good stuff!

🦸♂️ Young Neighbor Steps Up / A West Linn third-grader got a pretty memorable City Council shoutout this month after helping neighbors during a house fire. Timo Aljuboorii, 9, was skateboarding outside his home on Weatherhill Road in May when he noticed flames at a nearby house. He double-checked, got his mom, and helped set off the chain of events that got the neighbors and their pets safely out of the home. The kid will start fourth grade with a better resume than most of us. 😁

🍋 Fresh Squeezed in Sherwood / Lacey’s Lemonade officially celebrated its grand opening June 20 at 15994 SW Tualatin-Sherwood Road in Sherwood. The shop had already been open in some form, but the team posted that after weeks of getting the store ready, they were finally set to fully open with a menu, giveaways, and a raffle.
📚 Little Libraries, Big Hearts / Some of Wilsonville’s Little Free Libraries have been damaged recently, including several in Villebois where doors have reportedly been pulled off more than once. That is the frustrating part. The better part is that Wilsonville has about 30 of these little book-sharing spots around town, many cared for by volunteers and supported through the Wilsonville Public Library Foundation, which helps keep them filled with books and running smoothly. If you feel so inclined, make a donation to the WPLF and note it is for the Little Free Library program.
📸 Smile, Sherwood Drivers / Sherwood’s mobile speed cameras are moving out of the warning phase and into the real-ticket phase. Police say more than 3,300 drivers were caught going at least 11 mph over the 25 mph limit on Oregon Street during the first month of the program, with warning citations going out by mail. As of two days ago, those warnings are over, and actual citations will now be issued.
🚆 Tualatin Crossing Fix / Tualatin is still working on how to improve traffic flow and cut down on delays at the Tualatin-Sherwood Road and Boones Ferry Road intersection. The city’s current timeline shows alternatives being studied through summer and fall 2026, with public hearings not shown until winter 2027. Translation: a fix may be coming someday, but the orange cones probably are not showing up tomorrow.
🖊️ Remembering Zane Sparling / Portland journalist Zane Sparling, a Lake Oswego High School graduate whose work was followed by many across the metro area, died last Sunday after a two-year battle with a rare form of cancer. He was 33. Sparling covered courts, public safety, protests, and community issues for The Oregonian and other local media outlets, but South Metro readers may also remember him for the very Lake Oswego moment when he stood waist-deep in Oswego Lake while reporting on expanded lake access. His family has asked that memorial donations go to the EHE Foundation and the Oregon High School Journalism Institute.

💲 🎈 Tualatin River Discovery Day 2026
Tualatin Community Park, Tualatin | Saturday 8:30A - 2P | $12+
The Tualatin Riverkeepers’ 37th annual Discovery Day sends paddlers on a self-guided 3.6-mile trip from Tualatin Community Park to Metro’s Native Plant Center, with safety boats along the route and a shuttle back at the end. First-timers, families, and experienced paddlers are all welcome, and you can bring your own boat or rent one with life jackets and paddles included. Basically, it is a very Oregon way to spend a Saturday morning: floating down a river, learning local history, and pretending this counts as upper-body training.

🎈 5th Annual Skate Jam
Wilsonville Memorial Park, Wilsonville | Saturday 1P | Free
All ages are welcome for an afternoon of skateboarding, beginner and advanced jams, raffles, prizes, a Kona Ice truck, and more than $3,500 in gear giveaways. Skate lessons are also available for kids and teens, with helmets required for lesson participants. A pretty great option for anyone who can already land a trick — or anyone who just wants to watch someone else’s knees make brave choices.
🎈 🎵 Lake Oswego Festival of the Arts
Lakewood Center & George Rogers Park, Lake Oswego | Friday - Sunday | Free
The Lake Oswego Festival of the Arts returns for three days with more than 600 artists, indoor galleries, outdoor booths, live music, food, kids’ activities, and this year’s “Wild & Luscious” featured exhibit celebrating botanical art and the natural world. Basically, it is the kind of weekend event where you can browse art, hear music, feed the kids, and pretend you were only going to stay for 45 minutes.
💲 Pride Paddle
Willamette Park, West Linn | Saturday 10A - 2P | $35+
Celebrate Pride Month with a guided flat-water kayaking trip on the Willamette River, open to LGBTQIA+ community members. No experience is needed, adaptive gear may be available, and transportation is listed as available. A good pick if your ideal Saturday includes nature, community, and letting someone else handle the kayak logistics.
🎈 Dreamworks Annual Car Show
Dreamworks Collision Repair, Canby | Saturday 9A - 12P | Free
Classic cars, breakfast donuts, food for purchase, raffle items, trophies, and a good cause all roll into one Saturday morning show, with proceeds supporting the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life. Registration is $10 at the event, but it is free to stop by and look around. Basically, horsepower, chrome, and donuts — which is not a bad little Saturday.
80s Pop Culture Trivia
The Tack Room at Langer’s, Sherwood | Sunday 11:30A - 1:30P | Free
Test your knowledge of 80s pop culture during a 21+ trivia brunch with $2 mimosas, a brunch buffet, and $150 in prizes. 🎈 Pokémon Party
Tualatin Public Library, Tualatin | Sunday 2P - 4P | Free

🎈 💲 The Oregon Bird Man Live
Frog Pond Farm, Wilsonville | Saturday 10:30A - 11:30A | $13
Kids can meet exotic animals, reptiles, and plenty of birds during this all-ages educational show, which is included with regular farm admission. Admission also includes all-day access to the bounce park, farm animals, playgrounds, and shows, so this is less “quick bird thing” and more “we may be here until someone needs snacks.”
🎈 Splash Lab Morning
Little Nestlings Early Learning Center, West Linn | Saturday 10A - 11A | Free
Young kids can explore water through pouring, scooping, floating, sinking, funnels, cups, and other hands-on sensory play. This is not a swim event, but children may get a little wet, so bring a towel or change of clothes unless you enjoy the classic “why is the car seat damp?” mystery.
🎈 Summer Fun Factory
Lakeshore Learning Store, Lake Oswego | Saturday 11A - 3P | Free
Kids ages 3+ can stop in for a free Big Gem Diamond-Painting craft, with no reservation needed and adults required to stay with their children. A nice low-pressure Saturday option for families who want something creative, colorful, and blessedly indoors for at least part of the afternoon.

Nacho Meetup
Vanguard Brewing, Wilsonville | Saturday 3P | Food/drink prices vary
Wilsonville Democrats are hosting a casual, no-agenda meetup for Nacho Week, built around Vanguard’s street corn nachos with cotija, jalapeños, cilantro, lime crema, and plenty of melted cheese situation happening. The event is open to anyone, but the host is worth noting so nobody wanders in expecting nachos and accidentally discovers local civic small talk.
💲 🎵 Beer & Cider Festival
Our Table Cooperative, Sherwood | Friday 4P - 9P | $25
Sample local beer and cider from more than 15 Oregon makers, with food from the Our Table kitchen, live music, and additional drink/food tickets available for purchase. Entry includes five beer/cider samples or $10 toward food, which is a nice little choose-your-own-adventure situation for anyone whose Friday plan is “support local, but responsibly.”
🎵 Music on the Village Green
Bridgeport Village, Tualatin | Saturday 3P - 5P | Free
Grab a spot on the green for a relaxed afternoon of live music from Brian O’Dell while you shop, eat, or pretend you were only stopping by for “one quick thing.” It is part of a weekend music series running through the summer, which feels very convenient for anyone whose ideal concert also comes with nearby dinner options and actual bathrooms.
💲 Bob Ross Joy of Painting Workshop
TrueLeah’s Art Studio, West Linn | Sunday 10A - 4P | $65
Beginners are welcome for a full-day Bob Ross-style painting workshop where all supplies are included and the goal is to leave with your own “Waterlily” painting. The studio is tucked into a neighborhood backyard among the trees, which feels about right for a class inspired by happy little clouds, happy little trees, and possibly some very judgmental squirrels.
🎵 Slice of Summer Concert
Wait City Park, Canby | Sunday 6P - 8P | Free
Bring a lawn chair or blanket for a free evening concert featuring the Canby High Jazz Band and One Eyed Kats, with food vendors available for snacks or dinner. It is an easy Sunday night option: music in the park, something to eat, and no ticket math required.

🎵 Extended Hours with Live Music
Tumwater Vineyard, West Linn | Sunday 5:30P - 8P | Free
Enjoy a summer evening with extended patio hours, wine, food, sunset views, and live music from Dante Zapata. No reservations are needed, so this is a good low-effort Sunday night plan for anyone who wants the weekend to last just a little longer before Monday starts acting like it owns the place. 21+ please for this event.

🎈 💲 🎵 Tigard Festival of Balloons
Cook Park, Tigard | Friday - Sunday | $17 for ages 7+
One of the area’s signature summer festivals returns with hot air balloons, live music, a kid’s zone, local vendors, food, rides, and weekend entertainment that runs well beyond the morning balloon launches. Friday and Saturday both include main stage music, ice cream eating contests, and plenty for families to do once the balloons have done their photogenic sunrise thing. Kids 6 and under are free, and tickets are sold as a three-day weekend pass — which is either a great deal or a clever way to make sure your children ask to go back twice.
🎈 💲 Star Wars Night with the Hillsboro Hops
Ron Tonkin Field, Hillsboro | Saturday 5:03P | $23+
A baseball game, live cantina music, droids, and costumed characters all come together for a Star Wars-themed night at the ballpark. It is a bit of a drive, but for families with young Jedi, baseball fans, or adults who still have very strong opinions about the original trilogy, this could be worth the jump to hyperspace.
🎈 Milk Carton Boat Race
Westmoreland Park, Portland | Sunday 10A - afternoon | Free
One of Portland’s wonderfully weird summer traditions returns as homemade milk carton boats hit the casting pond for a day of floating, racing, wobbling, and maybe a little creative sinking. Registration is closed, but it is free to watch, with inspections starting at 10A, opening ceremony at 11:45A, races at noon, and a boat parade tentatively set for 3P. Come for the tradition, stay for the part where everyone silently judges whether that thing is actually going to float.
🎈 Huge 50 Cent Book Sale Fundraiser
Kraxberger Middle School, Gladstone | Saturday & Sunday 9A - 2P | 50¢ or less
Thousands of books will be on sale for 50 cents or less, with every purchase helping get books into the hands of low-income kids across Clackamas County. A very dangerous event for anyone who says they are “just going to browse,” because that is how you leave with 24 books and a tote bag making concerning noises.

Garage and estate sale listings are sourced from a variety of places online. We do our best to provide accurate information, but things can change. Click the address for a Google map.
