Good Morning, South Metro. Apologies for today’s issue landing in your inbox a little later than normal. Our internet provider decided to do some work this morning and knocked out the Wi-Fi for a few hours.

On the bright side, I now know the downside of Alexa devices. At one point, I was crawling around on my hands and knees just to turn off the lights.

And don’t forget to follow us on Facebook!

In today’s South Metro Weekly:

  • Corvettes take over Cars & Coffee in Sherwood

  • Adults race homemade soap box cars down Mt. Tabor

  • And a water polo tournament hits the Lake

🎈 😋 Project POOCH Annual Dog Wash
Stickmen Brewing Company, Tualatin Beer Hall | Saturday, 11 AM–3 PM | Free to Attend

There will also be raffles, nail trimming and ear cleaning for dogs who could use the full spa treatment.

Bring your broken household items to Sherwood’s Repair Fair, where skilled volunteers will help diagnose the problem and, when possible, get things working again. It’s free, practical and a whole lot more satisfying than tossing something in the trash.

🏀 Former Trail Blazers coach Tiago Splitter is saying goodbye to his Lake Oswego home. Splitter, who recently left Portland to become head coach of the Chicago Bulls, has listed the five-bedroom home for $3.5 million — just one year after buying it for $3.3 million. The 5,700-square-foot property includes a pool and spa, wine gallery and enough luxury touches to remind the rest of us that NBA real estate operates in a slightly different universe.

🕰️ Sherwood residents took a trip down memory lane this week. We asked members of our What’s Happening in Sherwood Facebook group what one thing from “old Sherwood” they wish was still around — and the memories came pouring in. Safari Sam’s and the old Robin Hood Theatre were clear favorites, along with the Cherry Tree, Sherwood Peddler, Papa Guido’s, Woody’s Bakery, Food Pavilion and even the old G.I. Joes. Turns out sometimes the places we miss most aren’t landmarks at all — they’re just the places where a lot of life happened.

🏗️ Wilsonville is considering stricter height limits for new Town Center buildings. The city is looking at removing rules that currently allow some developers to build taller than the standard three- to five-story limits in the area. The Planning Commission reviewed the proposal last night, and City Council is expected to take it up Sept. 10.

🎵 Lake Oswego is bringing back two concerts that weather and wildfire smoke knocked off the summer schedule. Wild Boys and Band After Midnight will both perform Wednesday, Sept. 2 at Foothills Park, giving music fans a second chance after their original shows were canceled in July and August. Wild Boys takes the stage from 6–7:15 PM, followed by Band After Midnight from 7:45–9 PM. Thanks to the Lake Oswego Review for the coverage and the heads-up on the new date.

🌊 A floating water polo course takes over Lakewood Bay this weekend. The third annual Oswego Lake Open Water Invitational runs Friday through Sunday, with matches scheduled from 9 AM–6 PM Friday and Saturday and 9 AM–4 PM Sunday. Spectators can watch from Millennium Plaza Park, making this one of the more unusual ways to spend a summer afternoon in Lake Oswego.

🌸 Canby is officially in full bloom as the Swan Island Dahlia Festival returns for the season. Visitors can wander nearly 50 acres filled with more than 375 varieties of dahlias, shop for fresh-cut flowers, grab something from the food carts and catch live music on weekends. The festival runs Wednesday through Sunday through September from 9 AM–5:30 PM, with free admission and parking. This year also brings back “The Bloom Room,” an immersive indoor floral display returning for the first time in six years.

🚒 Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue firefighters are helping battle a massive wildfire in southern Oregon. TVF&R joined crews from Banks, Forest Grove, Cornelius and Hillsboro as part of a Washington County task force sent to the Wrights Spring Fire southeast of Chiloquin. The fire had grown to more than 46,000 acres by Monday, with hundreds of firefighters assigned to the effort.

🎈 Corvette Day at Portland’s Cars & Coffee
Langer’s Entertainment Center, Sherwood | Saturday, 8 AM | Free
For generations, the Corvette has been the dream car — the one on bedroom posters, magazine covers and “someday” lists. Owners from around the region will show off everything from classics to newer generations, giving fans a chance to admire the cars up close, swap a few stories and maybe remember exactly why they wanted one in the first place.

🎈 Worth the Drive: PDX Adult Soap Box Derby
Mt. Tabor Park, Portland | Saturday, 10 AM–4 PM | Free
This may be one of the more wonderfully ridiculous ways to spend a Saturday. Adults will send homemade, gravity-powered racers flying down Mt. Tabor, with plenty of creativity, questionable engineering and bragging rights on the line. It’s free to watch, family-friendly and exactly the kind of event that makes Portland feel like Portland.

🎈 🎵 😋 Wilsonville Old Church & Pub 15th Birthday
McMenamins Wilsonville Old Church & Pub | Saturday, All Day | Free
McMenamins is throwing a birthday party for its Wilsonville Old Church & Pub, and 15 years seems like a perfectly good excuse to celebrate. By the way, the “Old Church” is actually 115 years old! The day includes food and drink specials, birthday cupcakes and live music from Johnny Franco & His Real Brother Dom from 5–6:30 PM, followed by New Old Stock from 7–9 PM. It’s all ages, free to attend and an easy excuse to stop by for dinner, music or both.

🎈 😋 Cruise to Brews Vehicle Showcase
Vanguard Brewing, Wilsonville | Saturday, 1–4 PM | Free
Car people, this one’s for you. Vanguard is opening its parking lot to classic cars, trucks, motorcycles and other treasured rides, giving owners a chance to show off their projects while everyone else gets to wander, admire and talk shop. The kitchen and taproom will be open throughout the afternoon, making it an easy stop whether you bring a vehicle or just appreciate a good one.

🎵 😋 Worth the Drive: Mulino Blues Festival
26412 S Hwy 213, Mulino | Saturday, 3–11 PM | Free
Blues fans may want to point the car a little farther south this weekend. The Mulino Blues Festival packs seven bands into one long summer afternoon and evening, with food available and plenty of room to settle in for hours of live music. If blues is your thing, this one looks well worth the drive.

🎈 💲 Kinder Carnival
The Little Gym of Lake Oswego | Saturday, 5–6:30 PM | Registration Required
Starting kindergarten is a big deal — for kids and parents. This special carnival is designed to make the transition feel a little more exciting and a lot less intimidating, with fun activities for kids plus a chance for parents to meet local kindergarten teachers, ask questions and get a better feel for what that first year will look like.

💲 😋 Summer Bunco Series: Island Nights
BearKat Brewing, Sherwood | Sunday, 5–8 PM | $30 Individual / $100 Table of 4
Break out the tropical prints and bring a few friends for an island-themed evening of Bunco, prizes and plenty of laughs. Food and drinks will be available throughout the night, and the event also supports SHS Grad Night 2027. New players are welcome, so you don’t need to know your way around a Bunco table before showing up.

A final thought...

Jane Goodall: “You cannot get through a single day without having an impact on the world around you. You must decide what kind of impact you want to make.”

That’s a pretty good challenge to carry into the weekend. Every conversation, every kindness, every choice to show up—or lend a hand—leaves something behind. You don’t have to change the whole world today. But you do get to decide what kind of difference you make in your little corner of it.

Thanks for reading. See you Monday morning!
